Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Has Tips On Burnout

Following being asked about burnout on Instagram recently, US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, affectionately known as AOC, sent out a campaign email that outlined her tips on how to prevent and recover from mental, emotional, and physical exhaustion.

“Burnout, especially in these times, seems to have become extremely common,” AOC wrote in the email, before offering her tips, which, according to a burnout coach, are ‘surprisingly useful’, reports CNBC in the US.

“When there is so much happening in the world around you and in your direct sphere of influence, it can be especially overwhelming,” she continued, before adding that she has experienced burnout in the past, but has learnt to set healthy expectations for herself while recovering, as doing too many draining activities can contribute to burnout.

The Metro reports that mentions of ‘burnout’ have increased by 128 per cent on Glassdoor in the UK,  the website where current and former employees anonymously review companies, since April as workers struggled to deal with long hours, and a worsening work-life balance, remote work, returning back to the office, and the pandemic.

AOC suggested that people should consider their whole selves as a cup, and partaking in activities that can be physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally demanding mean that you’re pouring from the cup, whereas activities that bring you joy and are just fr you and bring pleasure fill the cup.

She said that healthy balance is when you both pour from the cup and fill it up. Making a list of activities and scheduling them for throughout the day can fill your cup, as can reducing your workload, saying no to extra work, and prioritising how you spend your time and energy can also help fill your cup, and help ward off burnout.

She added that people will always feel entitled to you and your time, to avoid pouring from their cup, or to help fill theirs up, which makes it important to learn to say no.

She also said people should schedule things they can look forward to each day, like reading a book or going to a yoga class, and communicate their needs with people around them.
